Default DNS Failure, 6 Dec 2014

I woke up today to find that our Fixed Wireless Internet service was down. Well, that's nothing new. I did the usual. Reboot the router -- no help. Power cycle the wireless modem -- no help. So I called Xplornet tech support, and while on hold, decided to probe the problem.

"ping google.ca" returned "unknown host" which is normal; it means my computer can't reach the Domain Name Server to find the IP address for google.ca. I wanted to do a "traceroute" to find where the packets were being dropped, but without DNS I couldn't traceroute to google.ca -- I needed a numeric IP address. And I didn't know that.

But one IP address I can always remember is Google's DNS server, 8.8.8.8. So I did a "traceroute 8.8.8.8" -- and it got all the way there!

That told me two things: first, my packets were getting out to the Internet (the wireless network and the gateway are working). Second, I have access to a working DNS server -- Google's.

So, I quickly reconfigured my router to use Google DNS (8.8.8.8, and 8.8.4.4) as its static DNS servers, rather than accept the DNS provided by the Xplornet modem. (Our computers are programmed to get their DNS addresses from our router.) And presto, we had connectivity again. The entire problem was that Xplornet's DNS server wasn't working.

I stayed on the phone to tell this to Xplornet tech support, in the hopes that this would help them solve the problem. But I won't even know when this problem gets fixed -- I'm leaving our router set to Google's DNS.

Yea, I see on Xplornets Facebook and Twitter they had a few hour outage for the wireless 4G system(at least).

DNS choice is very important and that always leads to the argument of "use your ISP DNS and its so much better for routing and barf barf barf".

Except when the ISP DNS fails and repeat glitches over the year. Unlike GoogleDNS and OpenDNS who have a really good uptime(in comparison to some ISP DNS), which is made better with redundant servers to pick up the slack when one of their many DNS server's goes down for maintenance or other.

OK, where are you seeing this on Facebook or Twitter? The last post I see on their Facebook account is dated October. (Note that I'm not a registered Facebook user, so I don't get to see everything posted there.)

All I see on their Twitter account is "signing in" and "signing off" messages, nothing of substance.
