Default Up and running with 4G fixed wireless

Well, it took a while to arrange an installation date, but we're finally on-line with the 4G fixed wireless package. They took our Jupiter dish away.

Our installer said we have strong enough signal to get the highest speed package, but right now we're on the 5 Mbps/20 GB plan, which was what was being promoted back in July when we requested the switchover. This month they're offering a 5 Mbps/100 GB promotion, so I may call during the week to see if we can qualify for that.

The installer also advised waiting a day before doing any speed tests, so I'll do that tomorrow if I'm not too busy with other things.

Well, here I am up at 2 am, so I figured it was a good time for a test. 4.1 Mbps down, 0.9 Mbps up, pretty much as advertised.

:::.. Internet Speed Test Result Details ..:::
Download Connection Speed:: 4088 Kbps or 4.1 Mbps
Download Speed Test Size:: 6 MB or 6144 kB or 6291456 bytes
Download Binary File Transfer Speed:: 511 kB/s
Upload Connection Speed:: 929 Kbps or 0.9 Mbps
Upload Speed Test Size:: 832 kB or 851968 bytes
Upload Binary File Transfer Speed:: 116 kB/s
Timed:: Download: 12.313 seconds | Upload: 7.337 seconds
Tested At:: http://TestMy.net Version 13
Test Time:: 2014-09-07 02:15:15 Local Time
User Agent:: Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux i686) Presto/2.12.388 Version/12.16 [!]

Of course the real improvement is in ping times to google.ca, 75 msec on average:

--- google.ca ping statistics ---
30 packets transmitted, 30 received, 0% packet loss, time 29040ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 58.389/75.741/88.452/4.389 ms

Nice looking stats. Wish you well with it hopefully continuing on for a longer term without speeds fails, than all the other platforms you've had over the years.

I think I'm on a fairly new tower. The last time I had fixed wireless, I was pointed to a tower to the south. And that's the direction they looked when they did my recent site survey. But when they installed on Saturday, there was a stronger signal from a tower to my east. So that's what the installer used. (And yes, all the trees have full foliage right now. Always install during the summer. )

I'm expecting the prime-time stats to slowly degrade, as they start adding more subscribers. (The installer said they have a pile of used satellite dishes at the shop, from customers who have recently switched to fixed wireless.) But at least the ping time should stay good. I'm looking forward to trying VoIP again...it never really worked on satellite.

5 am stats, basically the same:

Those are some good speeds. It was unfortunate my site survey was negative. Good pings.

Thanks for the reminder - I haven't done a speed test lately. Tonight's prime time test was the first time I've measured a slowdown, but it's still acceptable:

:::.. Internet Speed Test Result Details ..:::
Download Connection Speed:: 2237 Kbps or 2.2 Mbps
Download Speed Test Size:: 4.9 MB or 4992 kB or 5111808 bytes
Download Binary File Transfer Speed:: 280 kB/s
Upload Connection Speed:: 924 Kbps or 0.9 Mbps
Upload Speed Test Size:: 832 kB or 851968 bytes
Upload Binary File Transfer Speed:: 115 kB/s
Timed:: Download: 18.281 seconds | Upload: 7.378 seconds
Tested At:: http://TestMy.net Version 13
Test Time:: 2014-09-30 20:09:30 Local Time
User Agent:: Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux i686) Presto/2.12.388 Version/12.16 [!]

--- google.ca ping statistics ---
30 packets transmitted, 30 received, 0% packet loss, time 29039ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 58.335/75.393/93.188/6.594 ms

Big rainstorm coming this afternoon, so I thought I'd do comparison tests in "fair weather" and in heavy rain. Here's the fair weather test -- my usual non-prime-time results:

:::.. Internet Speed Test Result Details ..:::
Download Connection Speed:: 4687 Kbps or 4.7 Mbps
Download Speed Test Size:: 6 MB or 6144 kB or 6291456 bytes
Download Binary File Transfer Speed:: 586 kB/s
Upload Connection Speed:: 920 Kbps or 0.9 Mbps
Upload Speed Test Size:: 672 kB or 688128 bytes
Upload Binary File Transfer Speed:: 115 kB/s
Timed:: Download: 10.739 seconds | Upload: 5.984 seconds
Tested At:: http://TestMy.net Version 14
Test Time:: 2014-10-03 11:09:23 Local Time
User Agent:: Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux i686) Presto/2.12.388 Version/12.16 [!]

--- google.ca ping statistics ---
30 packets transmitted, 30 received, 0% packet loss, time 29035ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 56.415/73.323/83.432/5.727 ms
